| Frequently Asked Questions About Our Products Q: I’ve never heard of Alcohol Gel Fireplaces. Are they new? A: Alcohol Gel Fireplaces were introduced on the market in 1985. They are not as commonly known as gas and natural fireplaces because they have been sold mainly through catalog distribution up until 2002. They are now sold world wide through hearth & patio retailers, pool & spa retailers, home furnishing stores, hardware stores, the internet, catalogs, and interior designers. They are also being offered to new home and condo models through builders and developers. Q: Who can use Gel Fuel Fireplaces? A: Anyone and everyone. They can go into apartments, condos, mobile homes, houses, places of business or anywhere you’d like to add ambiance. Q: How long does it take to receive my order and how will my fireplace arrive? A: Your order will usually arrive within 5-10 business days. Your fireplaces will arrive in 1-2 boxes containing several parts just as furniture does from an upscale furniture store or box store (like IKEA). Q: How long will it take to assemble my fireplace? A: The average time frame to put any of our portable fireplaces together is approximately 45 minutes. Q: What kinds of tools do I need for assembly? A: A power screwdriver is ideal. A hand screwdriver will work, but can be a bit frustrating. Q: What kind of installation is involved? A: Remember, there is minor assembly but NO INSTALLATION! These fireplaces and fireboxes do not require natural gas, electrical or propane services. There is no need for a chimney! All of our units are portable and freestanding. Q: Are there any restrictions as to where I can put my fireplace? A: As long as the firebox has a 1” clearance from the wall, you can put it anywhere. Our fireplaces that have mantel surrounds already have the 1” clearance built in. Our metal freestanding units have UL approved insulation on the back of the unit just in case you forget about that 1”! Q: Do the fireplaces require any maintenance? A: The fireplaces are virtually maintenance free. You’ll want to clean the logs every now & then by simply using Dawn dishwashing soap and warm water. Use a soft, damp cloth to clean the firebox and we recommend lemon oil for your wood mantel. Q: What are your logs made out of and will they burn? Will I ever need additional logs and do I purchase the logs separately? A: The logs are made from a mixture of ceramic and cement with steel reinforcements. A log comes with every fireplace so there is no need to buy logs separately. These logs do not ignite at anytime. The Sunjel is placed behind the log and burns inside the pint can that it comes in. Never pour the Sunjel on the logs or in any other reservoir. Because the logs do not ignite, the log that is supplied with the unit will last the lifetime of the fireplace. Q: How do I light my fireplace? A: First, remove the label from the Sunjel can and shake the can well (the more you shake, the more crackle you'll get when burning). Pop the lid off and put the can(s) in the fireplace. Light a long, stick match or BBQ lighter and apply the flame to the Sunjel. Watch as the flame slowly begins! Q: How high does the flame go? A: The flame dances beautifully so it never stays the same height. It’s usually 6-8” high. Q: What is Sunjel made of and is it safe? A: The Sunjel is comprised of Isopropyl Alcohol and organic gelling agents. It is the first to be ULC tested and approved in conjunction with approved Gel Fireplaces and Log & Grate sets. Our Sunjel is infrared tested annually for safety and to ensure consistency. This environmentally friendly product is non- explosive and will not self-ignite. Q: Will the Sunjel put off any kind of odor or fumes? A: There is an initial burn off smell for the first few fires, however it is very minimal. This is a conditioning of the fireproof paint on the insert. The Sunjel itself does not have an odor. The only thing you’ll smell is heat! Think about the first time you turn your furnace on for the winter. That is a much more offensive smell than the initial burn off. Q: What differentiates your gel fuel from others? A: Our Sunjel is Methanol Free. Methanol is the ingredient that causes an offensive odor and has been found in other gelled alcohols. Don’t be fooled! Know that you’re getting a quality product that has been proven safe with its certification, and does not contain methanol. Always look for the gel with the red label…Sunjel! Q: What does the Sunjel emit when it’s lit? A: The Sunjel burns into water vapors. There is an acceptable and approved amount of carbon dioxide (the gas that humans emit when speaking or breathing) emitted as it burns. This equates to about the same amount of carbon dioxide emitted by 2 people talking in one room. Q: What does it mean when you say 1 can of Sunjel puts off 3000 BTU’s? A: The temperature of the room that the fireplace is located in will raise 2 degrees per can, per hour. Q: Can my fireplace be used as a heat source? A: No. These appliances only act as a heat supplement. Q: How long does each can of Sunjel Fuel burn? A: 2-3 hours depending on the altitude, humidity, storage and the age of the gel. In an ideal scenario, the gel will be less than 1-2 years old, the cans will be stored in a cool place, and the can will be nicely shaken and label torn off (required) before burning. This will yield approximately 2 hrs 40 min of burn time. Q: How many canisters of Sunjel can I burn at one time? A: The maximum restriction is 3 cans. Two cans are most popular to acquire the best crackle, act as an adequate heat supplement and create a beautiful fire. Q: Once I light my fireplace, do I have to let the Sunjel burn the full 2-3 hours? A: No, you may turn off the Sunjel at anytime. Some of our fireplaces have a snap or slide shut-off system, and others do not. For those that do, follow the instructions and make sure to replace the canister lid(s) to prevent evaporation. For those that do not have this system, take a hot pad and put the lid from the Sunjel canister back on manually. Q: Does Sunjel simulate burning wood in anyway? A: Sunjel makes a fabulous crackling sound effect. The better you shake the can, the more crackle and better performance you will get from the Sunjel. Q: Is there a way to get that real, wood-burning smell? A: Yes, we offer a couple accessories for your gel fireplace or log & grate set. We have a 7-Scent Sampler incense pack that comes with a special terra cotta holder. We recommend you put the cone in this holder, light it and place it beside the log in your fireplace. Never put these directly in the Sunjel. A fabulous, clean smoke will trickle from your fireplace with a great wood aroma such as Cedar and Hickory. Each cone burns about 45 minutes. We also offer hand made, hand poured Wood Scented Candles that come in a variety pack of 6. Each candle burns up to 25 hours and smells as if you were standing in a forest! |
